Desi Guide to Minneapolis

Nick-named the City of Lakes, Minneapolis offers its visitors a taste of modern lifestyle on a lush natural platter. It is the largest city in the State of Minnesota with a population of 3.5 million. The South Asian population of the city is approximately 1.7%.

The city is a combination of culture, modern lifestyle and nature at its best. Minneapolis has a rich resource of water with over 20 lakes and wetlands, waterfall and creeks. It also has breath-taking landscapes which provides with a number of activities for locals and visitors.

Climate in the city is hot and humid in the summer and cold and dry in winters. It is also ranked as the fifth cleanest city in the world.

Desi attraction in Minneapolis

With a substantial south Asian population Minneapolis has a lot to offer with its wide range of desi restaurants and eateries.

  • One of the most famous desi attractions in Minneapolis is the Minnehaha Park. The park has an area of 193 acres and is the oldest attraction in the city. Overlooking the Mississippi river is a 53ft high waterfall (laughing waterfall) which is the key attraction of the park. The waterfall is surrounded by three gardens of lush greenery. It attracts almost 850,000 visitors on a yearly basis and is an excellent place to spend your day biking, enjoying nature and having a little outdoor picnic. With new amenities like a disc golf course, volley ball court, picnic shelters, rest rooms, wading pool and eateries,  it is a perfect destination to have a fun filled day with your family. In addition to the gardens and waterfall the park is also home to several sculptures which are of historical importance.  
  • Bakken Museum is another must see destination. It houses a display of objects that explore the mysteries of electricity and the electrical world. Named after Earl Bakken, the creator of the artificial pace maker, the museum has interactive exhibits which explore the field of natural electricity.
  • If you love to shop, Nicollet Mall is the place for you. Being the commercial and cultural heart of the city, Nicollet Mall has a line-up of shops and stores, restaurants and galleries which not only attract the locals but also is a must see when you’re visiting the city. Another very exciting place to shop is the Mall of America which is located in the suburbs of Minneapolis. Home to 520 retail outlets and over 50 restaurants it is most definitely a place you can find some souvenir for every one on your list. Along with being a mammoth of a mall it also houses an amusement park with over 25 different rides. Once you have visited the malls, do not forget to make a trip to the Minneapolis Planetarium as well.

Furthermore the city also has good transportation system with trains and buses that connect every part of the city and serve as a very convenient means to commute within the city. Another exciting way of exploring the city is the Pedi cab. One can roam around in an eco-friendly way by using this service. These cycled cabs can be a delightful experience to take your own sweet time to get to know the city better.
